IELTS Writing Task 2: Two-Part Question Guide & Band 9 Sample

Welcome back to the IELTS Writing Task 2 section on englishlanguagestudies.com! We have covered Opinion, Discussion, and Problem/Solution essays. Today, we are tackling the final major Task 2 prompt: the Two-Part Question (sometimes called a Direct or Double Question).

This prompt is easy to identify because it literally ends with two distinct question marks. For example: “Why is this happening? Is it a positive or negative development?” The absolute golden rule for this essay is balance. You must answer both questions equally. If you write 200 words answering the first question and only 50 words answering the second, your Task Response score will plummet.

In this guide, we will break down the foolproof 4-paragraph structure for a Two-Part Question, provide a highly relevant practice prompt about modern gaming, and reveal a flawless Band 9 sample answer. Grab a notebook, and let’s get writing!

Sample Response:

In recent years, engaging with computer and video games has become a dominant leisure activity for both adolescents and adults. This growing phenomenon is primarily driven by the highly immersive nature of modern games and the global social connectivity they provide. Nevertheless, I argue that this is largely a negative development due to the severe physical health risks and potential for psychological addiction.

The primary reason for the surging popularity of video games is the unprecedented level of immersion and socialization they now offer. Unlike the simple, single-player arcade games of the past, modern titles feature cinematic storytelling, photorealistic graphics, and expansive digital worlds. Furthermore, the advent of high-speed internet has transformed gaming into a highly social experience. Players can now form teams, communicate via voice chat, and compete with friends or strangers across the globe in real-time. For many young people, games like Roblox or complex strategy titles serve as virtual community spaces where they can socialize, collaborate, and escape the stresses of their daily academic or professional lives.

Despite these engaging features, the excessive consumption of video games is a profoundly negative development. The most immediate consequence is the promotion of a highly sedentary lifestyle. Unlike traditional sports or outdoor hobbies, gaming requires individuals to sit stationary in front of screens for hours on end, which directly contributes to rising rates of obesity and posture-related ailments. Additionally, many modern games are psychologically engineered to be addictive, utilizing reward systems that compel players to continuously log in. This addiction can lead to severe sleep deprivation and the neglect of real-world responsibilities, such as schoolwork or family relationships.

In conclusion, the escalating time spent on video games is caused by their immersive entertainment value and robust online communities. However, because this prolonged screen time frequently leads to sedentary health issues and behavioral addiction, it must be viewed as an overwhelmingly negative societal trend. It is crucial for individuals to practice strict moderation to enjoy these digital spaces safely.
