Free 1st Grade Reading Passages & Comprehension Questions

Welcome back to the early reading section on englishlanguagestudies.com! If your young reader has mastered our previous worksheets, they are ready for some fresh practice. Repetition is the key to building reading fluency, so we have put together a brand new set of 1st grade reading passages!

This printable activity features five very short, decodable stories. The vocabulary focuses on common sight words, basic colors, and simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. Each story is followed by three easy questions to help your child practice remembering what they just read.

3 Easy Tips for 1st Grade Reading Practice

Before your little one starts, try using these helpful strategies:

  • Echo Reading: If your child is feeling frustrated, try reading one sentence out loud first, and then have them “echo” (repeat) the exact same sentence back to you while pointing at the words.
  • Hunt for the Period: Teach your child that a period means “stop and take a breath.” This helps prevent them from rushing through the text and losing the meaning.
  • Talk About the Title: Before reading the story, read the title together and ask, “What do you think this story will be about?” This primes their brain to look for specific details!

Grab a pencil, get comfortable, and let’s start reading!
