Welcome back to the early reading section on englishlanguagestudies.com! Practice makes perfect, especially when it comes to early literacy. If your first grader loved our previous worksheets, we have a brand new set of grade 1 reading comprehension passages ready for them to tackle!
This printable activity features five very short, highly decodable stories. We have focused heavily on short vowel sounds, basic sight words (like the, is, to, go), and simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. Each story is followed by three easy questions to build confidence in memory and recall.
3 Easy Tips for Grade 1 Reading Practice
Before your little one starts, try using these helpful strategies:
- The Pointer Finger: Have your child use their index finger to point to each word as they read it. This builds “tracking” skills and keeps them from skipping lines.
- Find the Sight Words: Before reading the story, ask them to take a crayon and circle all the words they know instantly (like “a” or “the”).
- Read Aloud: First graders should always read out loud! Hearing their own voice helps them connect the sounds to the letters on the page.
Grab a pencil, get comfortable, and let’s start reading!

Great job! Keep up the amazing reading! 🎈📖
Amazing job completing the worksheet! Consistent practice is the secret to building strong reading fluency. When early readers see the same sight words (like the, is, in, to) repeated across multiple stories, it helps lock those words into their long-term memory.
Celebrate your little reader’s hard work today! High fives and words of encouragement go a very long way in making reading feel like a fun activity rather than a chore.
