The biggest trap students fall into with this prompt is imbalance. If you write 200 words about why one view is great, and only 50 words about the other view, you will lose significant points. You must remain objective and dedicate an entire body paragraph to exploring why people hold the first view, and another paragraph exploring why people hold the second view, before clearly stating your own stance.

1. The Practice Prompt
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

2. The Perfect 4-Paragraph Essay Structure
To score a Band 7.0 or higher, you must demonstrate objectivity by discussing *both* sides before explicitly stating which side you agree with. Use this layout:
Paragraph 1: The Introduction
1. Paraphrase the Prompt: Introduce the debate by rewriting the prompt in your own words.
2. Thesis Statement: State your opinion clearly (e.g., While traditional schools offer social benefits, I believe that home education provides superior academic preparation.).
Paragraph 2: Body Paragraph A (Discuss View 1)
1. Topic Sentence: State why some people support the *first* view (Traditional Schools).
2. Explanation: Explain the logic behind this perspective.
3. Example: Provide a specific example of this benefit.
4. Result: Conclude the paragraph by summarizing this view.
Paragraph 3: Body Paragraph B (Discuss View 2 & Your Opinion)
1. Topic Sentence: State why others support the *second* view (Educating at Home).
2. Explanation: Expand on the reason using different vocabulary.
3. Example: Provide a real-world example of this benefit.
4. Link to Opinion: Explain why you personally side with this perspective.
Paragraph 4: The Conclusion
1. Summary: Briefly summarize the two different views discussed.
2. Restate your Thesis: Reiterate your final opinion using fresh vocabulary.

The debate regarding the most effective environment for childhood education is highly contentious. While a significant portion of society argues that traditional educational institutions are unparalleled for holistic development, others maintain that individualized home education offers superior preparation for the future. Although traditional schools foster vital interpersonal skills, I believe that educating children at home provides a more rigorous and tailored academic foundation.
On the one hand, proponents of traditional schooling emphasize the importance of social development. In a conventional classroom, children are consistently exposed to a diverse array of peers and authority figures. This environment naturally cultivates essential soft skills such as teamwork, conflict resolution, and empathy. For instance, when students are required to collaborate on group projects or participate in team sports, they learn how to navigate social dynamics and communicate effectively. Many argue that these daily social interactions are incredibly difficult to replicate in a home environment and are crucial for thriving in a modern, collaborative workplace.
On the other hand, advocates for home education argue that one-on-one instruction allows for a highly customized learning experience. In a crowded classroom, teachers are forced to teach at a generalized pace, which can leave struggling students behind or cause gifted students to lose interest. Conversely, home education allows the curriculum to be uniquely tailored to the child’s specific strengths and weaknesses. For example, preparing a younger student at home for rigorous standardized exams allows them to accelerate through subjects they grasp easily while spending extra time mastering complex topics. I personally agree with this view, as this targeted, distraction-free preparation ultimately maximizes a student’s academic potential and equips them with strong independent study habits.
In conclusion, both educational environments possess distinct advantages. While traditional schools are excellent for nurturing social skills and peer collaboration, I maintain that educating a child at home yields better academic outcomes. The ability to customize the pace and focus of the curriculum ensures that students are perfectly prepared for the specific intellectual challenges of their future.

How did your essay compare? One of the key strengths of a Band 9 Discussion essay is the use of objective language in the body paragraphs. Notice how the sample answer uses phrases like “proponents of traditional schooling emphasize…” and “advocates for home education argue…” rather than stating these views as absolute facts.
By dedicating a full paragraph to the benefits of classroom socialization, the essay proves to the examiner that the writer fully understands both sides of the debate before confidently choosing the home-education approach in the final paragraph.
