This printable activity is perfect for 2nd graders or intermediate ESL learners. It features five engaging short stories followed by questions that test their memory, sequence of events, and basic inferencing skills. Parents and teachers can read along with their students or encourage them to read independently!

3 Easy Tips to Improve Grade 2 Reading Comprehension

Before your child tackles this worksheet, here are three strategies to help them get the most out of their reading practice:

  • Ask “Why” and “How”: Grade 2 is the perfect time to introduce inferencing. Instead of just asking what happened, ask your child why they think a character did something, or how a character might be feeling.
  • Look for Context Clues: If your child gets stuck on a big word, don’t tell them the answer right away. Ask them to read the rest of the sentence and guess what the word might mean based on the clues around it.
  • Read with Expression: Encourage your child to pay attention to punctuation. If there is an exclamation mark (!), they should read it with excitement. This builds reading fluency and keeps the story entertaining!

Grab a pencil and some paper, and let’s start reading!
