Free Grade 2 Reading Comprehension Passages & Answers

Welcome back to the early reading section on englishlanguagestudies.com! Second grade is an exciting time. Students are taking the decoding skills they learned in first grade and using them to read longer, more interesting stories. To help build their reading stamina, we have created this brand new set of grade 2 reading comprehension passages.

This free printable activity features five engaging stories, including a mix of fun fiction and easy-to-read non-fiction. Each passage is followed by three questions that test detail recognition, memory, and basic true/false logic.

3 Easy Tips for Grade 2 Reading Practice

Before your second grader dives in, try using these helpful reading strategies:

  • The “5 Ws”: Remind your child to look for the Who, What, Where, When, and Why as they read. This helps them stay focused on the most important details of the story.
  • Read Twice for Fluency: Have them read the story the first time just to figure out the words. Then, have them read it a second time with a smooth, “storyteller” voice!
  • Underline the Proof: If they aren’t sure about an answer, teach them to be a text detective. Have them use a pencil to underline the exact sentence where they found the answer.

Grab a pencil, find a quiet spot, and let’s start reading!
